New Canadian citizens can take part in deciding who is elected to govern at the municipal, provincial and federal levels. Voting is an important part of our democracy. Elections Nova Scotia has prepared information to help new Canadians to learn about how elections work in Nova Scotia and how to get on the Nova Scotia voters’ list. This information is now available to new citizens at citizenship ceremonies hosted by Citizenship and Immigration Canada and the Elections Nova Scotia website. Participation in our democratic system is a right that accompanies citizenship in this country.
New Canadian citizens, who register on the Nova Scotia voters' list, could even choose to become a candidate in the next provincial election, either with the support of a registered party or as an independent candidate. Further information for new citizens is available in both English and French.
