First e-Ballots to be Cast Today in the Provincial General Election
Media Release: Thursday, November 7, 2024
Elections Nova Scotia – Today, Thursday, November 7, 2024, voters in Nova Scotia will be able to cast their ballots in the provincial general election on a secure tablet using Elections Nova Scotia’s new e-Ballot system.
Before the close of candidate nominations on November 6, early votes were cast by write-in ballot at returning offices. To date (from the start of early voting on Wednesday, October 30, 2024 until the close of polls yesterday (6 pm on November 6) 10,188 early votes were cast in the provincial general election. As of today, November 7, all early voting will be done by e-Ballot. On election day, Tuesday, November 26, 2024, voting in Nova Scotia will be done using traditional paper ballots.
The safe e-Ballot system allows voters to select the candidate of their choice on a secure tablet. Once a vote is cast, the e-Ballot system produces a paper ballot for the voter to place in the ballot box. E-Ballot allows fast and secure counting of early votes when the polls close on election night. This means the results of the provincial general election will be returned quickly and efficiently.
The Government of Nova Scotia made amendments to the Elections Act in 2021 to provide authority for e-Ballot. Elections Nova Scotia has developed the secure e-Ballot system and is confident in the integrity of this innovative voting method.
