Elections Nova Scotia Presents 2024-2025 Budget Estimate to the Special Committee of the House of Assembly
Media Release: January 25, 2024
Elections Nova Scotia – On January 24, 2024, Li Chao, the Chief Financial Officer for Elections Nova Scotia (ENS) presented a budget estimate of $9.269 million for the 2024-2025 fiscal year to the Special Committee of the House of Assembly that convenes annually by law to consider the budget submissions of ENS and the Auditor General.
ENS’s 2024-2025 budget estimate includes $5.1M of additional funding needed to fulfill its mandate compared to the budget targets received to date. This includes $1.6M election readiness funding to prepare the delivery of the 42nd Provincial General Election in July 2025. It also includes $3M for the introduction of digital voter registration on election day for the 42nd PGE at all voting locations. This will provide more streamlined and efficient registration process on election day, real time digital elector strike-off to reduce the risk of a voter attempting to vote more than once, easier data access for candidate’s campaigns, and timely production of the final list of electors.
“As an independent office of the House of Assembly, Elections Nova Scotia is charged with upholding Government accountability,” said Li Chao, Chief Financial Officer. “Our mandate to deliver fair and inclusive provincial elections impartially and professionally, is drawn from the Elections Act.”
The Special Committee reviewed ENS’s budget estimate and recommended it without alteration to Finance, Treasury and Policy Board to be included in the 2024-2025 provincial budget.
The budget estimate as submitted to the Special Committee and the speaking notes for the Chief Financial Officer are available on the ENS website.
ENS is an independent non-partisan agency that reports to the members of the House of Assembly through the Speaker. Its mandate is to deliver provincial elections impartially and professionally.
