Media Release: Tuesday, May 24, 2022

Elections Nova Scotia – The Chief Electoral Officer has released the second volume of post-election reporting for the 41st Provincial General Election held on August 17, 2021.

The Report of the Chief Electoral Officer on the Proceedings of the 41st Provincial General Election held August 17, 2021, is presented in three volumes. Volume I, Statement of Votes & Statistics was released on January 31, 2022. Volume II, Report on the Conduct of the Election and Recommendations for Legislative Change has been released today and includes lessons learned and legislative recommendations. Volume III, Financial Information and Statistics, will be released later this year and will provide financial information on election expenses, candidate reimbursement, and financial statistics.

The 20 recommendations for legislative change presented in the report are grouped into six themes: Independence, Fixed-date Elections, Clarity, Transparency, Alignment, and Electoral Finance. The recommendations were developed based on the post-election review and feedback during the delivery of the 41st provincial general election. The intent of the recommendations is to improve Nova Scotia’s electoral process to achieve the highest quality election administered in the Province.

The Volume II report is the last official report by Chief Electoral Officer Richard Temporale before his retirement on May 31, 2022. In the report, Mr. Temporale shares his position on the issues he feels impact Elections Nova Scotia as an independent agency and the integrity of the electoral process in Nova Scotia.

Mr. Temporale is available for interviews this week on his recommendations for legislative change, the importance of Elections Nova Scotia’s independence, and his views on electoral reform and innovation in Nova Scotia. Please contact Naomi Shelton to make interview arrangements.

Volume II, Report on the Conduct of the Election and Recommendations for Legislative Change is available here on the Elections Nova Scotia website. Elections Nova Scotia has also published a booklet that summarizes the legislative recommendations. The legislative recommendation booklet is also available here on the website.
