First Time Voters Encouraged to Register Early
First Time Voters Encouraged to Register Early
Media Release: July 15, 2021
Elections Nova Scotia – To prepare for the 41st provincial general election, Elections Nova Scotia encourages first time voters to register early. Even though an election has not been called, voters can register any time on-line to ensure they are on the Nova Scotia Registry of Electors.
New votes include young adults 18 years of age or older, new Canadian citizens, or voters who have moved to Nova Scotia and have not yet voted in a provincial election.
Elections Nova Scotia maintains a Register of Electors of anyone eligible to vote in a Nova Scotia provincial general election or by-election. The Register is updated regularly and there are several ways to be added to the list. Though being registered before arriving at a polling station to vote is not required, those who are registered are sent a Voter Information Card (VIC) during an election with information on where and when to vote.
To be eligible to vote, you must be a Canadian citizen, 18 years or over on election day and have lived in Nova Scotia at least six months by the date the election is called.
“I encourage new voters to register early so that when an election is called they will receive their personalized Voter information card that will explain where and when they can vote and provide information on their safe voting options,” says Chief Electoral Officer Richard Temporale.
There will be many options to vote safely when the 41 Provincial General Election is called. Voters can apply on-line now so they will be able to vote by mail using a write-in ballot. Voters will also be able to vote safely in-person before election day at any returning office or early voting location in the province, or on election day at their assigned voting location or the returning office in their electoral district. Strict COVID-19 protocols will be in place at all voting locations for the 41 Provincial General Election.
