Elections Nova Scotia – There are a variety of voting options available in the Preston by-election. Election day is Tuesday, August 8, 2023 but voters in Preston can vote early at either the returning office or community poll. Eligible voters in Preston, can also apply on-line to vote by mail or have a write-in ballot team visit them in their home.

All registered voters in Preston will receive a personal Voter Information Card (VIC) in the mail outlining where and when they can vote. Eligible voters do not need a VIC to vote.

Eligible voters can be added to the voters list during the by-election when they go to vote. Voters in Preston can also use the ‘Where do I Vote?” tool on the Elections Nova Scotia website (electionsnovascotia.ca) to find a voting location near them.

Early voting is available Monday to Friday, 9 am to 6 pm, at the Preston returning office at 293 Main Street. Early voting is also available from Saturday, July 22 to Saturday July 5 at the community poll at 2345 Highway 7, East Preston. There is no voting on Sundays. On Thursday, August 3 and Friday, August 4 there will be extended hours at early voting locations until 8 pm.

If voters in Preston wish to vote by mail, they can apply on-line at electionsnovascotia.ca for a write-in ballot. A write-in ballot is the remote voting option available to eligible voters in the Preston by-election. To vote by write-in ballot, a voter must first apply, then receive, complete, and return their write-in ballot kit. When a voter applies to vote by write-in ballot, that is the form of voting they must use. Voters who need assistance can ask someone they trust who is at least 18 years old to act as their agent to help them apply for and return their write-in ballot. Voters in Preston can contact the returning office at 1-888-503-5835 for information on how to apply for a write-in ballot or to arrange for a write-in ballot team to visit a voter in their home if necessary. The deadline to apply for a write-in ballot on-line is Saturday, July 29 by 6pm. The deadline to apply for a write-in ballot in person and by agent is Tuesday, August 8 at 3 pm. All completed write-in ballot kits must be returned before the close of voting on election day to be counted, that is, 8 pm on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

On election day, Tuesday, August 8, 2023, voting will be open from 8 am to 8 pm. On election day, voters in Preston may vote at their assigned voting location or the returning office.

Eligible voters in the Preston by-election must be 18 years of age or older on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, a Canadian citizen, reside in the electoral district of Preston, and have lived in Nova Scotia since January 7, 2023 (six months before the writ of election was issued).
