Candidate Nominations Fee Waived for the Pictou West By-election

Media Release: April 22, 2024

Elections Nova Scotia – Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dorothy Rice has issued a directive that the $200 candidate nomination fee is not required for the Pictou West by-election as part of the nomination process as outlined in the Elections Act.

Following the 40th and 41st Provincial General Elections (PGE), The CEO recommended a legislative change to remove the candidate nomination fee from the Election Act. To date, these recommendations have not been accepted by the Nova Scotia Government. These recommendations for legislative change were based on an Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench decision.

Candidate nomination fees were waived in previous by-elections and candidates for the 41st PGE had their nomination fees refunded.

Individuals who intend to run as a candidate may register with Elections Nova Scotia prior to a writ of election being issued. This allows the candidate to accept contributions and incur expenses. Now that the Pictou West by-election is underway (election day is Tuesday, May 21, 2024), candidates must complete official nominations forms to have their name added to the ballot. The deadline for candidate nominations for the Pictou West by-election is Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 2 pm.

Elections Nova Scotia publishes the names of nominated candidates and the names of the official agent for their campaign on the ENS website at www.electionsnovascotia.ca as nominations are received.
